If you manage a large facility or multiple properties, you know how fast a few simple overhead cuts can add up. Here’s another Squires Electric recommended cost saver!

The importance of exterior and common-area lighting is a no-brainer — it’s a safety and security requirement — but lighting the outside ain’t cheap! Fortunately there are ways to help do it as efficiently as possible.

Occupancy sensors can activate lights only when an area is in use and there are other controls that can be set to dim lighting depending on the levels of natural light in the space.

Photocells are commonly used for exterior lighting because they are fairly inexpensive and automatically adjust to changes in daylight hours. They require special considerations for placement, though and cannot handle large voltage fluctuations or power surges from shorting breakers for example .

Mechanical timers are also inexpensive and easy to install, but they have to be manually adjusted to account for daylight savings time. Astronomical timers that self-adjust for those changes are available, but they come at a higher price.
