Thanksgiving approaches! One thing in the menu that visiting friends and family alike can all agree on is SAFETY. Squires recommends a few quick checks to make sure that nothing interrupts when creating holiday memories.
- SMOKE ALARMS. You should consider testing your smoke alarms monthly, but especially when hosting visitors and guests. You never know what distraction might lead to a hot oven, space heater, or even curling iron being left unattended.
- GFCI’s. Too many cooks in the kitchen and too many people getting ready in the same bathroom means more instances where people, water, and electricity might mix. Test the reset button on your GFCI’s in these rooms to make sure they function correctly.
- COUNTER TOP APPLIANCES. Inspect cords for damage and make sure they are plugged into GFCI outlets. Avoid running extension cords in high traffic areas to prevent tripping or spilling hazards. Do not plug large appliances, like refrigerators, into extension cords and avoid overloading a circuit with multiple high-wattage appliances.
- MAJOR APPLIANCES. Clean oven and stove tops, making sure they’re free of grease and dust. Inspect the exhaust hood and duct over the stove. Vacuum the refrigerator coils to prevent potentially dangerous build up.
We wish you and your family a safe and warm Thanksgiving and Holiday season!
